When wildfires hit the Eastern Plains of Colorado, the damage doesn’t just stop when the flames go out. What’s left behind can be overwhelming—charred debris, destroyed structures, burned metal, melted plastics, and the emotional weight of nearly losing everything.
Recently, we were called out to a rural property off Highway 94 after a fast-moving fire—sparked by what was later identified as a large experimental drone—swept across the prairie and came dangerously close to taking a family’s home. The flames started near Big Springs and Calhan Highway and burned with such intensity that the homeowner described the heat as “astronomical.” They were convinced they were going to lose everything.
But thanks to quick-acting first responders, their home survived. And that’s where we came in.
Wildfire cleanup isn’t like regular junk removal. This isn’t couches, old TVs, or a garage cleanout. This is the remains of someone’s life—burned, twisted, fragile, and dangerous to handle.
On this job, one of the biggest losses was a mobile home trailer that burned completely. Our team used a skid steer with a grapple bucket to safely pile and remove all the destroyed material, hauling it away piece by piece. Every move has to be careful, controlled, and coordinated. You can’t just “pick things up and toss them.” Burn debris is sharp, unstable, and full of hazards.

Before we arrived, the homeowner shared what happened the day the fire hit. She was driving home from Colorado Springs when she saw smoke rising in the distance. She immediately called her son, giving him instructions on how to evacuate the animals, what keys to grab, and what vehicles to use. When she reached the property, she ran inside to save what she could—until a firefighter physically grabbed her and pulled her out.
